Introduction

Hey there.
My name's Darren, and I'm a game designer.

As a game designer, my personal belief is that game concepts can come from anywhere. In the world, everything has purpose. And if we can draw inspiration from the world, there are countless ideas that can be borne from our minds.

That, is why I'm always observing, breaking down things that i can see into smaller parts and keeping them in mind-storage, so i can build my own concepts in a way that makes sense while being completely new.

If you catch me staring in your direction for an uncomfortably long period of time, don't worry. I'm just finding inspiration.

My journey

2004 - 2012

When I was at age 9, I played a particular game where you are able to create and manage a zoo, which was very enjoyable for an animal lover like myself. However, I did not just love animals, I loved ecology, so one day I decided instead of creating just a zoo, I attempted to make a self-sustaining habitat for all the animals I spawned in.

The game was, of course, not meant to be played this way, not to mention the technology available back then simply did not allow it to work. So I thought, why won't it play it the way I wanted? I told myself then, that if there was a gaming experience that people could not enjoy, I wanted to be in the position to create it. This was the beginning of my journey, with the goal of being a game designer.

2012 - 2015

After 9 years of basic education, I finally am able to make the first chosen step into game design. This was when I enrolled into Nanyang Polytechnic to take up the "Diploma for Digital Media Design (Games)", now more appropriately named "Digital Game Art and Design"

While studying here, I learned mostly about game art, game design and most importantly the skill to work with people from different skill sets to create a game.

I even had the opportunity to go to Nagoya, Japan's Trident Computer College for an attachment programme, and got to work on a game with Japanese students during my time there.

2018 - 2022

Now, after specializing mostly in game art with adequate knowledge about game design, i enter Digipen Singapore to undertake the Bachelor of Arts in Game Design. This is where i was introduced to scripting, and more advanced techniques in game design.

My time in Digipen was adequately challenging, with projects that push my limits but ultimately improved me as a Game Designer. There was a focus on working in larger teams, which allowed me to hone my interpersonal skills, such as team-play and leadership skills.

After 4 years of study in Digipen, I have graduated with a high level of proficiency in C# scripting, as well as the utilization of Unity and a deep knowledge of Game Design principles.
